COIHiAR Volume 28 Issue 9 February 11, 1999 Submitted by: Carrie Rogers Saint Valentine’s Day is a holiday hon oring lovers. It is celebrated on February 14th by the custom of sending out greet ing cards or gifts to express affection. The cards, known as valentines are often designed with hearts to symbolize love. They were originally created through one’s own devices. However, stationers began to provide embossed, paper-laced- edged sheets on which to write the mes sages. They soon took on the form of hearts detailed with doves, cupids and blowers. Finally, stock valentines began to be printed to save people the trouble of making them. The holiday most likely derived from the ancient Roman feast of Lupercalis, held on February fifteenth. The festival gradually became associated with the feast day (Feb. 14) of two Roman mar tyrs, both named Saint Valentine, who lived in the third century. St. Valentine has traditionally been regarded as the pa tron saint of lovers. Myth has it that dur ing his imprisonment before execution he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter, the only person who had been kind to him. Just before his death he is said to have sent her a farewell message signed “From your Valentino.” The VOICE Club Submitted by: Marcia Adams As you may have noticed, all WCC buildings have had posters announcing an all-knew WCC VOICE Club, requesting you to become mem bers.
